In the United States of America, coffee shop refers to a small and casual restaurant. But this phrase generally refers to something that has the characteristics of both the bar as well as the restaurants. But the coffee shop should not at all be confused with cafeteria. Coffee shop also is referred to as coffee house or coffeehouse.
So far as the name, coffee shop, suggests, it is a restaurant like place where tea and coffee are served. But these are not the only things that are served to the customers who come to the coffee houses. The coffee houses also offer various items of hot meals. These meals may also consist of various kinds of fast foods. It also happens in some cases in some countries that the coffee shops have got the permission or the license of serving soft as well as hard drinks to the guests. People who visit the coffee houses have the drinks inside the coffee shop or the coffee house.
In the Muslim dominated countries in the East and the other Muslim dominated ares in the West, there are coffee shops, some of which offer the guests or the customers the scope to smoke the hookah.
Smoking is not allowed in the coffee shops in some countries. But there are, of course, some countries where the coffee shops have the license to serve wine or other drinks and also to let them smoke inside the coffee shop. The Netherlands is the country that is very tolerant of smoking and drinking the coffee shops.
There are some other aspects of coffee shops. The cultural aspect of the coffee shops cannot be ignored. People come here and spend a lot of time over gossiping and discussing the current affairs. They discuss the topics that they like and are interested in. They speak about sports, politics, economy, weather and so many of the other topics. Literature and culture and the criticism of different aspects of them from various view points are also included within the list of activities that are carried out by the people who visit the coffee shops.
There is also a type of people who spend a lot of time in the coffee shops in order to avoid or keep away from the usual and irritating cares of life. Coffee shops are such places that men and women of any age and any taste and culture can visit them. The young couples find them to be their frequent haunts while the comparatively older persons often spend time over chatting over topics that makes them feel nostalgic.
