Specialty of South Indian cuisine

Specialty of South Indian cuisine are unique in every sense, from that of North India. It has a humid climate and being surrounded by water bodies, makes the region depended on rice, coconut and vegetables. Since rainfall is in plenty and rice is the staple food of South India which is made into desserts as well. The southern region includes Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala which has a varied range in sea food as well as vegetarian food. There are several specialty of south Indian cuisine.

Chettinaad cuisine is a specialty of the Tamil Nadu state and Andhra Pradesh is also known for its seafood and vegetarian dishes. Specialty of South Indian cuisine lies in Kerala's Malabari style cooking which involves a lot of sea food whereas Hyderabad is famous being the Nizam's abode and Nizami food. It is aromatic and rich in taste that is sweet, sour as well as spicy. There is also a huge use of nuts, saffron, and dry fruits. Rice being a staple food, most of the dishes are centered around it, like the Sambar and rice. Sambar is a soup of chillies and spices and rasam is also their favorite. Coconut is almost used in all the dishes, specially chutneys and other items. Poppadums are crispy fried pancakes which is a must in a south Indian meal. These are also the menu of a typical south Indian restaurant.

Another specialty of South Indian cuisine is the pancake type idli and dosas made from rice. Yoghurt is is one of the specialty of South Indian cuisine, so is tamarind. They basically like to eat dishes which are basically a bit sour. Chutneys also contain a whole lot of tamarinds, fenugreek seeds, coconut and peanuts. Among the popular beverages are coffee and coconut milk which is available in plenty. There is an uniqueness in the serving as well, which is done in plantain leaves. This leaf is very nicely adorned with papads, vada, pickle, curries, dal or lentils, rice and curd. Among south Indian sweet dishes are sweetened rice or pancakes stuffed with sweet dal. These are some of the specialty of south Indian cuisine.


Not only vegetarian, the specialty of south Indian cuisine consists of chicken and sea food . This is a spiced up variety of chicken and non vegetarian food called the Chettinaad cuisine. One specialty of Kerala cuisine is the use of coconut milk in almost all the dishes including meat and vegetables. Banana chips are hugely cherished in all Kerala households. Hyderabadi Kacchi Biriyani and Haleem are some of the special Asian cuisine very popular in this region. At the end of a whole some South Indian meal, the guest will be offered a banana, nuts and betel leaf.
